INTERVIEW WITH THE TRANSLATOR

Professor Ahmad Khan sat with Sheikh Nuh Ha Mim Keller for a candid interview to discuss his recently published new translation of the Quran, entitled The Quran Beheld. Having studied this work closely, especially in the context of university teaching, Professor Khan wanted to find out more about the 17 years that Sheikh Nuh had spent translating the Quran into English. The conversation is wide-ranging: they spoke about his childhood, the books he read as a teenager, his work at sea as a fisherman and on the farm, and his education with masters of the Quranic and Arabic sciences. The interview gives an important and precious insight into the translator’s deep relationship with the Quran and why he believes a new translation is so important for our times.
